After a year of development and 26 experimental versions, a stable release of the open source implementation of Win32 API - Wine 9.0 - has been presented, which includes more than 7000 changes. Corrective releases of X.Org Server 21.1.11 and DDX component xwayland 23.2.4 have been published. The new versions fix 6 vulnerabilities (CVE-2023-6816, CVE-2024-0229, CVE-2024-21885, CVE-2024-21886, CVE-2024-0409, CVE-2024-0408). Some of which can be exploited for privilege escalation on systems where the X server is running as root, as well as for remote code execution in configurations where X11 session redirection via SSH is used for access.

Security experts at Google's Threat Analysis Group (TAG) have announced cyberattacks that they believe are linked to the Cold River hacker group. It, they claim, has ties to Russian intelligence services. The attacks are carried out using phishing techniques on targets in NATO countries, including the US and the UK. The group uses the SPICA backdoor to gain access to victims' computers and steal documents and cookies.
The hackers send victims a PDF document that the sender claims contains an encrypted article and offers a decryption utility that is actually a backdoor. Google detected the active campaign and added Cold River-related domains and files to its Safe Browsing service database to protect users.

According to the latest Trendfocus research, global hard disk drive (HDD) sales declined both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year in Q4 2023. Between 27.6 and 29.7 million units of all types were shipped, down 3.6 to 3.7 percent from the previous quarter and 18.1 to 23.9 percent from the last quarter of 2022.
However, enterprise HDD shipments grew slightly, confirming continued demand for these devices in the business segment.Total sales were approximately 212 exabytes. Seagate remains the market leader, although its sales are also declining. Western Digital and Toshiba are also showing a downward trend, losing market share.

a 52mm telephoto camera at 12MP.The camera features optical zooms of 0.5x, 1x and 2x. Photos are incredibly detailed and contrasty in all lighting conditions. The portrait mode has been improved, which activates automatically when you want to take a portrait photo. The TrueDepth camera got auto focus and an improved Smart HDR shooting mode.
This year, smartphones got a USB-C connector for charging instead of Lightning.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
Also at the Apple presentation 2023 showed the professional versions of iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. A Linux kernel block subsystem maintainer spent 5 minutes on code and increased the number of I/O operations per second by 6%

Jens Axbo reported that he was able to increase the number of input/output operations per second (IOPS) by 6% (or even more for full Linux kernel configurations).
His idea was to cache the current time request in the block subsystem made during each I/O operation, since there is nothing in the block system that needs nanosecond time precision.
Axbo explained that this idea came to his mind 5 years ago, but he postponed the implementation then due to other challenges. Recently, he returned to his idea. The developer spent only 5 minutes making edits and testing his idea.
